Dear Parents / Carers
Parent Feedback – Would you like to share your thoughts on our OOSC provision? If yes, please can you drop us an email with your comments or your child’s comments. We might use them on future promotional material for the Playhouse. Thank you.
This Week – It has been an exciting week in OOSC. On Tuesday the Happy Chicks eggs and incubator arrived but the excitement really started at Breakfast Club on Thursday when we arrived in the morning, the first chick had hatched. Throughout the day the chicks continued hatching and all activities seemed to stop in the Playhouse; the children eagerly watched the first cracks appear and the entire hatching process. When the exhausted chicks eventually emerged from their shells it was to a delighted audience! Our activities continued throughout the week, and we have also used lots of construction toys, played board games, drawing and colouring and of course the pool table came out. Outside we have played cricket, football, Swingball, skipping and played on the scooters.
Monday – Forest School – We collected ‘v’ shaped sticks from the garden and using rubber (from bike inner tubes) we made our catapults. We used tins and bottles for our target range and using mud in our catapults we aimed and fired! Rowan and Arielle went freestyle and made their own targets around the garden. This activity was very carefully supervised!
Tuesday – Science Society – This week we made lava lamps. We started by pouring oil and water into jars, added blue food colouring, this sank through the oil into the water below. We added Alka Seltzer tablets when the water turned blue. The tablets started fizzing when they hit the water causing carbon dioxide bubbles to rise. The bubbles took some of the coloured water with them and when the gas escaped at the top of the coloured water it sank back down. The bubbles rising and falling created the effect of a lava lamp. It was great fun!!
Tuesday – Gaming – Mario is still the most popular game. There’s been lots of teamwork and sharing!
Wednesday – Cinema Circle – This week we watched ‘Matilda’. The children watched the film and then took part in a fun quiz … well done to Ruairi, he remembered it was Bruce Bogtrotter who ate all the cake. Ruairi was offered the first slice of chocolate cake, this was then shared amongst his OOSC friends.
Thursday – Den Building – This week the children decided not to make their dens, instead they sat carefully around the fire in the firepit enjoying hot chocolate and marshmallows. The children were amazing; a fire and World Book Day outfits made for a challenging and very well-planned activity. Some of the children were taste testers for next week’s baking activity; they tried dough balls and garlic butter warmed on the fire!
Thursday – Animating – Ethan very kindly brought his Marvel mini figures into the Playhouse to use for our films this week … they were a great hit. Ethan allowed our animators to create a number of films using his figures. Great teamwork and sharing! One film has a flying superhero! Please take a look on our Facebook page to see one of their creations.
Friday – Baking – This afternoon in our baking session we will be making mini cheesecakes. The children will be crushing up biscuits, they’ll add an angel delight filling and a topping of mixed fruit. They’ll be lots of weighing and mixing!
Next week – We continue with our themed activities. We will also be caring for our garden wildlife, making sure they have food and water and we’ll be looking for signs of spring.
Monday – Forest School – We will be having our very own ‘Playhouse Bush Tucker Trials’. The children can be involved in putting various skills to the test. There will be an exciting obstacle course, physical challenges and even some edible items to try .. no spiders!! We might light the fire too!
Tuesday – Science – Next week we will be cutting out ghostly shapes in card and we will be using them to create shadows. We will be thinking about what causes a shadow to appear and if there are any uses for shadows!
Tuesday – Gaming – The Nintendo switch and other games will be available for the children to play with. Encouraging teamwork and sharing!
Wednesday – Cinema Circle – We will be watching Nanny McPhee next week. The children will be invited to write a letter or draw a picture about all the wonderful things they’ve done with their grandparents.
Thursday – Den Building – Next week the children will be able to create their own dens in a ‘Castles & Forts’ style. The children loved role playing as ‘The Barbarians’ and have requested this theme. We will enjoy our popcorn snack in our fortresses.
Thursday – Animation – Next week Rowan has offered to bring in his Lego mini figure soldiers and knights. The children are looking forward to using these for their film making.
Friday – Baking – We will be baking Dough balls filled with garlic and /or cheese. The children will be making their dough using flour, oil and water and will fill their dough balls with cheese and/or garlic butter.
Outside activities all week: There will be connect 4, giant Duplo, the mud kitchen, construction vehicles, football and Meccano.
Baking – Here are some of the children making peppermint creams last week.
Have a lovely weekend!
Kind regards
The Playhouse Team
